From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. To tax (from the Latin taxo; "I estimate", which in turn is from tangō; "I touch") is to impose a financial charge or other levy upon a taxpayer (an individual or legal entity) by a state or the functional equivalent of a state such that failure to pay is punishable by law. Taxes are also imposed by many subnational entities. Taxes consist of direct tax or indirect tax, and may be paid in money or as its labour equivalent (often but not always unpaid). A tax may be defined as a "pecuniary burden laid upon individuals or property to support the government […] a payment exacted by legislative authority." A tax "is not a voluntary payment or donation, but an enforced contribution, exacted pursuant to legislative authority" and is "any contribution imposed by government […] whether under the name of toll, tribute, tallage, gabel, impost, duty, custom, excise, subsidy, aid, supply, or other name." In modern taxation systems, taxes are levied in money, but in-kind and corvée taxation are characteristic of traditional or pre-capitalist states and their functional equivalents. The method of taxation and the government expenditure of taxes raised is often highly debated in politics and economics. Tax collection is performed by a government agency such as Canada Revenue Agency, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in the United States, or Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC) in the UK. When taxes are not fully paid, civil penalties (such as fines or forfeiture) or criminal penalties (such as incarceration) may be imposed on the non-paying entity or individual. GNU Free Documentation License How could a Kantian justify progressive taxation? Q. Perhaps a Kantian couldn't. But I'd be inclined to make a case on grounds of the the self-love example in the Foundations : no rational being can will a world in which nobody helps anyone else. Progressive taxation is a form of helping others. But Kant never says you should help others on all possible occasions and by all possible means. Why shouldn't the rational agent 'pass' on progressive taxation if e.g. she gives sufficiently to charity ? Asked by Geoffrey T - Fri Nov 13 12:38:37 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Most on line services are subscription only and as they are aimed at the professionals they are not cheap!. CCH, Australia, law book co, Thompson & legal, are all good sources of taxation material and lawbook (at least a few years ago when I last looked) used to have some really good reporting and updating services as well as general reference. You would be able to get CCH phone number via telstra directory assistance and possibly the others as well. Check out the library at your nearest tertiary institution (particularly Uni) as they usually stock various accounting mags and there should be adds in some of them for the services you are looking for. The ATO Law site will have all the existing tax law material as well as the latest and… [cont.] Answered by magpiez - Sat Feb 3 20:06:56 2007 From Yahoo Answer Search: "taxation" To tax (from the latin taxare: to estimate, which in turn is from tangere: to touch) is to impose a financial charge or other levy upon an individual or legal entity by a state or the functional equivalent of a state.
