how did the comet shoemaker levy 9 make a crater on jupiter if there was no surface on jupiter to collide with?
Q. jupiter is a gas giant and it has no surface, right?could it have disintegrated in the atmosphere and then brightened up the atmosphere to make it appear as a crater?

A. It didn't make a crater on Jupiter that we could see. Jupiter is a gas giant but remember the gas is very dense. Upon entry inot the jovian atmosphere the fragments of comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 experieced greater and greater densities until the exploded leaving behind discolorations in the gaseous upper atmosphere. These discolorations were visible from earth. Also remember Jupiter does have a solid rocky core. It's got to have something massive at it's center to hold all of that gas togeather. BTW, Some telescopes were able to capture the impact flashes.
