does anyone know how to press legal charges against someone for tax fraud?
Q. I have recently found out that someone had gotten my daughter's social security number and used it on her income taxes. I am not sure how she got the information but I want to make sure she can never do it again. I was also informed that she got over $3000 back because she used my daughter's information I want to make sure she has to pay all that back and has charges brought on her. If anyone knows what I have to do please by all means let me know.

A. You need to call the IRS and make a formal complaint. If they are illegally using her social security number (like for work) than you can call social security office and lodge a formal complain there as well. You are very unclear on this circumstances here, so hard to give you a better answer. Is this person a relative that had your child for part of the year? If they had your child more months than you did, they have the legal right to claim her as a dependent. You cannot press legal charges for tax fraud. Only the IRS can do so. You cannot legally force her to pay back the money, only the IRS or Social Security office can do so.
