The level of Taxation in Canada is average among Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries. Approximately 70% of the Canadian government's income comes from taxation, the rest from tariffs, fees, and investments.

Administration

Federal taxes are collected by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), formerly known as "Revenue Canada" or the "Canada Customs and Revenue Agency".

Under "Tax Collection Agreements", CRA collects and remits to the provinces:

  • Provincial personal income taxes on behalf of all provinces except Quebec, so that individuals outside of Quebec file only one set of tax forms each year for their federal and provincial income taxes.
  • Corporate taxes on behalf of all provinces except Quebec and Alberta.

The Ministère du revenu du Québec collects the GST in Quebec on behalf of the federal government, and remits it to Ottawa.

The provincial governments of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Newfoundland and Labrador no longer impose a provincial sales tax and in those provinces the federal government collects goods and services tax at a rate 8% higher than in the other provinces. The additional revenue from this "harmonized sales tax" is paid by the federal government to the three harmonizing provinces.

What is the procedure of payment taxation in Canada , though? is it possible to pay by cash?
Q. would a tax payment be done via the central treasury account? is it possible to pay tax by cash or bank account? or both it means How to pay tax? what do you often do after you have received the notice of the tax administration agency in Canada?

A. you can pay your tax via an EFT through your bank account. Basically on your tax forms there is a spot to enter banking info and attach a black cheque to the return in order to get either a direct deposit of a refund or withdrawl of taxes owing.

What tax form will be used to confirm a 25% repayment of 2008 RRIF withdrawals in Canada?
Q. While it was a thoughtful and lenient provision in light of market losses, I do wonder about the expense of creating a form that will only be used in one taxation year.

A. It wouldn't be the first time that a Form was created for a single year use. Many accountants will remember an election for Capital gains that was only available in 1994. In either case, there is no form for this. What people will use for verification is the documentation provided by their financial insitutions. The amount repaid will be claimed as a deduction at line 232 of the income tax return.

Dual status taxation under NAFTA agreement?
Q. I am a Canadian citizen working in US since June 25, 2005. As far as I understood I am considered as an alien resident for 2005 tax purposes. I would like to know should I report my Canadian incomes from Jan until June 2005 to US IRS? I would like to know the same thing about Canada. Should I report my US income to CCRA? in another word do I pay taxes on both incomes to both goverments for 2005? FYI, I got T4 for Canada and W2 for US. I don't work for any Canadian company anymore and physically I have lived in States since June 2005.

A. All of the following is tentative, based on the limited facts provided, and should be verified with a qualified tax advisor. If you have lived in the US since June 25, 2005, chances are that you are considered a US resident for tax purposes. Your US residency starts (probably) on June 25, or whatever day you entered the country to begin your residency. This is true whether or not you have a green card. You are not required to include your Canadian income earned prior to your "residency starting date" to the US, but you may choose to do so (and receive a credit for Canadian tax liability on that income) by electing to be treated as a resident for the entire year. Under some circumstances, it is desirable to make that election. I do… [cont.]
