From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. To tax (from the latin taxare: to estimate, which in turn is from tangere: to touch) is to impose a financial charge or other levy upon a taxpayer (an individual or legal entity) by a state or the functional equivalent of a state. Taxes are also imposed by many subnational entities. Taxes consist of direct tax or indirect tax, and may be paid in money or as its labour equivalent (often but not always unpaid). A tax may be defined as a "pecuniary burden laid upon individuals or property to support the government […] a payment exacted by legislative authority." A tax "is not a voluntary payment or donation, but an enforced contribution, exacted pursuant to legislative authority" and is "any contribution imposed by government […] whether under the name of toll, tribute, tallage, gabel, impost, duty, custom, excise, subsidy, aid, supply, or other name." In modern taxation systems, taxes are levied in money, but in-kind and corvée taxation are characteristic of traditional or pre-capitalist states and their functional equivalents. The method of taxation and the government expenditure of taxes raised is often highly debated in politics and economics. Tax collection is performed by a government agency such as Canada Revenue Agency, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in the United States, or Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC) in the UK. When taxes are not fully paid, civil penalties (such as fines or forfeiture) or criminal penalties (such as incarceration) may be imposed on the non-paying entity or individual. GNU Free Documentation License If i paid corporate taxes out of my pocket, is it deductable? Q. I was a officer in a corporation. I never received any pay. When the corporation when bankrupt it owed sales tax and withholdong taxes. I had to pay these taxes out of my pocket. Are these taxes deductable from my federal taxes. Asked by ralph p - Tue Oct 30 09:32:36 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. No based on the theory that you were not engaged in a trade or business. I have toyed with the same issue for clients but haven't had any with enough to warrant what it would cost to fight. If there is enough money involved and you wanted to try something novel, you might deduct the expenses on the theory that you were being held as an involuntary surety for the corporation. You should be up front with IRS about what you are doing and have professional help before you try this because it would be about 100% certain to end up in court. Answered by wartz - Tue Oct 30 09:57:44 2007 How do we file taxes for my brother who died in 2007? Q. My brother died in May 2007. He left behind a 2 year old daughter who lives with my parents who have guardianship of her. Do they: 1. File their taxes as usual and claim my niece on their taxes as a dependent? or 2. File taxes on behalf of my brother and claim her on his taxes? or 3. Do they even need to file taxes on his behalf? We've tried looking online on the IRS website and can't find anything pertaining to this situation. Any suggestions? Asked by GGGG lou EEEE - Mon Jan 21 00:20:38 2008 - - 12 Answers - 0 Comments A. I'm not sure who whe executor of his estate would be but that would be the person to ask. If it's one of your parents then maybe they can contact a lawyer or a CPA to get more answers. Answered by Patricia Z - Mon Jan 21 00:24:39 2008 Can you itemize your state taxes on your federal tax return?
Q. I hear so much about how you won't have enough to itemize to overcome the standard deduction if you don't own a home. However, I paid almost $4000 in state taxes in 2006, which is close to my standard deduction of $5150 (single). I've heard that you can itemize state taxes. Does that mean many people can have enough to itemize (using their state taxes) without owning a home? Asked by Caribou2 - Mon Apr 9 01:25:04 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. Yes! you should try to use Schedule A to better the standard deduction. It requires digging through your records but could result in some savings. Re: state taxes -- there was a last-minute change after the tax instruction booklets were printed (details in Publication 600 on IRS site). You can deduct either state AND local INCOME taxes OR state & local SALES taxes -- but NOT both. Presume your $4,000 paid is income, not sales tax (unless you bought some REALLY expensive items and/or live in a high sales tax area). Now, what else can you deduct??? Under "Medical/Dental" you need to be able to show payments 'more than usual' -- IRS decided that 'more than usual' is more than 7.5% of your "adjusted gross income" -- see line 38 on Form… [cont.] Answered by notanexpert - Mon Apr 9 02:56:48 2007 From Yahoo Answer Search: "taxes" To tax (from the latin taxare: to estimate, which in turn is from tangere: to touch) is to impose a financial charge or other levy upon an individual or legal entity by a state or the functional equivalent of a state.
